Building an airsoft gun

One of my friends actually built his own spring gun. He used parts from several broken $10 guns and some parts which I think he got from a hardware store. He got a metal frame for it and in the end it looked really nice. I think he ended up selling it on ebay for a nice chunk of money. Sadly, this friend moved away 3 weeks ago and I haven't talked to him since.

Anybody ever built a gun before? I'm looking into building one for the fun of it and I may need some suggestions from others which have done this sort of thing before.

Nice custom guns can be worth it if they are done right.

why would he go through that kind of trouble? it sounds like a lot of tedious work for something that might not work
